Angst (2003) Review

Fiona Horsey is quickly turning into the Jamie Lee Curtis, the Linnea Quigley, the Fay Wray of her era. But this scream queen is a leading lady in her growing number of films: The focus of the movie, generally appearing in almost every scene. (Case in point: In Twisted Sisters she appeared in two roles.)

In Angst, renamed from Penetration Angst, and you'll soon see why, Horsey plays the virginal Helen, an unassuming girl who is forcibly pushed into sex in a car one night. And things are going along, Helen screaming, until the guy just... vanishes. Where'd he go? We'll find out in fairly short order, as this soon becomes a recurring theme in Helen's life. (She may be the most-raped woman on film.) However Helen always gets her vengeance, because every tryst ends the same way: The guy disappears. She figures it out soon enough. The guys are being sucked up into, er, well... you know... up there. And they're moaning and groaning inside. She goes to a gynocologist, but he drugs her and tries the same stunt. He ends up the same way. Helen ends up a streetwalker, hungry for flesh, but also looking for love... which it may be hard for her to find, considering.

This is not altogether a horror flick, as it's loaded with black humor. It's more of a sex comedy with a dark undertone than a horror film. And Horsey is not a bad actress at all. I wish I could say the same for her co-stars -- a side plot involves Helen's true love, who ends up in various affairs with one of a pair of conjoined twins and a psychopath before finally reconnecting with Helen in the end -- none of whom make much of an impression. The script, as you can imagine, is highly repetitive, too.

Still, it's a fun and often funny movie, far better than its direct-to-DVD pedigree might indicate. Give it a whirl if the synopsis sounds at all intriguing.
