Good for Nothing Movie Review

One gets so used to seeing crappy independent comedies that one scarcely knows what to do when a truly funny one comes along.

Good for Nothing, a simple film that just wants to make you laugh it the misfortune of its star (Scott Jason), is just such a movie, expertly written and full of laugh-out-loud jokes that could leave a grown man in tears. Its story -- a deadbeat guy wants nothing more than to be an actor (despite a dearth of talent) and must contend with a nutcase brother, a nutcase mother, her nutcase boyfriend, and, well, a whooooooole lot of other problems that just get in his way.

The only real problem with this hilarious film is star Jason (who also co-wrote and co-produced) -- an older, more jaded Jason Biggs -- who delivers his otherwise zinger lines with an unfortunate stiltedness that robs them of much of their oomph. Jason's co-stars, obviously aware of his onscreen travails, do their best to jazz up his performance but there's only so much emoting one man can do. In one telling, Jason's character complains that he has "the acting ability of a robot." Not far off. In the end, it's up to the script to redeem Good for Nothing, and much to my surprise, it does.

A rough dub job and some editing issues (probably where footage didn't come out right or the shot just got missed altogether) are the only other remaining problems, but these will likely be fixed before the film's release*.

Recommended -- check it out at a film festival near you.

Good 'n' plenty.

*or possibly never, as the easygoing producers tell us during the trailer.
