LaLee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton Movie Review

Interesting documentary but rather one-note, as LaLee's Kin tracks one ultra-poor Mississippi school and one even poorer family over a few months as the school tries to improve its standardized test scores enough to stay open and the family (LaLee's titular kin) tries to stay fed and clothed. It's easy to blame their problems on the legacy of cotton (read: slavery), but when we discover LaLee is one of 23 children, the lack of birth control (read: common sense) becomes possibly a more sensible target. Nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar.

I saw this documentary several years ago and have never forgotten it. I was impressed to hear about the many contributions that poured in. As a teacher in Title I schools for the past 27 years, I applaud the efforts of the superintendent and the educators that are sticking it out. Lalee is an example to us all about family and the true meaning of LOVE. I would love to know the present status of her grandchildren!

Today is my first time ever seeing this documentary. I am truly heartbroken about the situation. I would love to help out as much as I can. If someone could please contact me to let me know what I can do. I will drive to Mississippi everyday to help out. I live in New Orleans, La so that's not so far. Please e-mail me
