A stagehand is suing the organisers of the MTV Video Music Awards after he suffered a nasty fall on the red carpet at the event.

Crewmember Barry Glenn Bass has filed a lawsuit claiming he was injured in a freak accident at the 2012 ceremony at Los Angeles' Staples Center when a stage platform collapsed and he tumbled six feet (1.8 metres) to the ground.

In the legal documents, obtained by Tmz.com, Bass alleges he was left unable to work and struggled to pay mounting medical bills.

He is targeting Viacom, the company behind Mtv, and Aeg, the owners of the Staples Center, in the lawsuit.
