Jersey Shore' cancelled? "Why oh why!" we hear you cry. But unfortunately the rumors are true, with the show set to hit screens for one final season this October before its cancellation due to unknown reasons.

The MTV show has run since 2009 (2010 in the UK) and has had five seasons so far. It has been responsible for launching the showbiz careers of Nicole Polizzi aka Snooki, Mike Sorrentino and Pauly D who has become one of the highest earning disc jockeys on the planet. There is no confirmed reason as to why the show has now been axed, but a fall in the ratings and the ever-increasing salaries of the cast members are thought to be highly contributing factors. Season three of the show saw them bring in a record 8.87 million viewers, though these figures have since subsided. Also, Polizzi's pregnancy was thought to have a significant impact on the viewing figures as she quit her partying lifestyle to take care of her baby boy, Lorenzo, who was born last week on August 26th 2012, with her fiance Jionni LaValle.

The show featured the lives of several Italian-American friends, mainly from New York, who were usually filmed at their shared home in Seaside Heights, New Jersey - though there were also seasons filmed in Italy and Miami. The sixth series will air in the US on October 4th 2012.
