Boy bands ruled the MTV European Music Awards in Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday night (09Nov14) with One Direction and 5 Seconds Of Summer collecting five of the 15 competitive categories.

One Direction were winners before the ceremony started, picking up the Biggest Fans prize on the red carpet. Harry Styles and his bandmates accepted the award via video as they were in London preparing for a performance on The X Factor U.K, the programme that made them superstars.

The Story of My Life singers went on to pick up the Best Pop and Best Live trophies, while their Australian counterparts walked away with awards for Best New and Best Push.

It was also a big night for Ariana Grande, who opened the show and then collected the ceremony's first honour for Best Song (Problem). She also picked up the Best Female accolade.

In her acceptance speech she thanked her fans and Mtv bosses for helping engineer her collaboration with Azalea.

She said, "This has been a really crazy year, last year I was presenting to Iggy and this year I'm nominated for a bunch of things and I got to open the show and I can't thank everybody who's been supporting me this past year enough. I can't tell you how grateful I am.

"I also want to thank Mtv for having me again because last year, when I met Iggy, I feel like that's part of the reason Problem happened, which is why everything happened this year, so thank you."

There were also multiple wins for Katy Perry, who collected the Best Video prize for Dark Horse and the Best Look award.

Grande's performance at the top of the show was one of many highlights - EMA host Nicki Minaj, U2, Enrique Iglesias and Ed Sheeran also hit the high notes at The Hydro venue.
