Leading up to the MTV video Music Awards 2012, there is a massively diverse list of nominees up for the fifteen award categories.

You may already be familiar with the predictably high-rated new music videos from the likes of Rihanna, Drake, Katy Perry and Kanye West who have been nominated for several 2012 VMA awards, but you may also overlooked some of the newer, more modest (and arguably more innovative) artists that have additionally been selected. Ranging from the wildly bizarre and eccentric to the plain and simple and to-the-point, these lesser known species of musician have created artistic and utterly thought-provoking videos that will not fail to engage you no matter what your music tastes are.

In the Best Hip-Hop Video category we have Childish Gambino 's 'Heartbeat'; an example of one of the more uncomplicated creations and a truly emotive effort. It features a couple in a car going from having an icy atmosphere between them to a romantic tryst and back again which pretty much tells the story that Gambino raps. For the Best Pop Video (and Best New Artist I might add) are Fun with their video for 'We Are Young' which shows the band performing amongst a bunch of rowdy youths in slow motion - simple yet stunningly effective. For Best Rock Video The Black Keys would be our choice with 'Lonely Boy' - simple and eccentric showing a single man singing along and busting some moves, and for Best Electronic Dance Music Video (and Best Direction) is, the strangest of the lot, Duck Sauce with 'Big Bad Wolf': a slightly crude but otherwise hilarious video that must be seen by everyone.

An interesting video from Of Monsters and Men with 'Little Talks' has been selected for Best Art Direction; it's half animated and half not with lots of weird face paint and images of monsters. and men. It's definitely in artistic competition with Gotye 's 'Somebody That I Used To Know' video (selected for Best Editing and Video of the Year) which shows a naked Gotye being painted as part of linear wall water-colour.

The awards will be presented on September 7th 2012 in LA.
