Nancy Kerrigan, the American figure skater who was the victim of an infamous attack planned by her rival Tonya Harding, became teary eyed as she attended her brother's manslaughter trial in court on Tuesday (17th May 2011). Nancy Kerrigan's brother Mark is facing charges related to the death of his 70-year-old father Daniel, reports the Boston Herald.
While giving her testimony at the Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn, Nancy's mother Brenda broke down in tears, saying her husband was "everything" to her, adding, "I'm so sorry, I said I wouldn't do this". Daniel Kerrigan died at the family's home in Stoneham on 24th January 2010, the couple's 48th wedding anniversary. The prosecution argues that a drunken Mark Kerrigan began fighting with his father, which triggered heart failure. Brenda described the incident by saying, "He fell down just like a feather coming out of the sky". She was then asked, "He fell down like a feather out of the sky? By that you meant that he landed hard?", to which she replied, "No" , before being overcome with emotion, prompting the judge to recess for the day. Her daughter Nancy also became teary at the same moment, as did the accused.
Two-time Olympic medallist Nancy Kerrigan was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2004. She was honoured at the Ice Theatre of New York's annual benefit gala.
