Naomi Campbell is appearing in a New York court today on allegations of throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper's head.

The 36-year-old supermodel was arrested in March last year after her maid, Ana Scolavino, claimed that she suffered a cut to the head in the alleged incident during a row over a pair of jeans.

Prosecutors have been working to agree on a plea bargain with her lawyer, over the second degree assault charge, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reports.

Ms Campbell denies the charges and her lawyer has indicated that she could accept a community service punishment.

But she is said to be keen to avoid the humiliating experience of Boy George, who was ordered to clean streets in New York as part of his punishment for reporting a false burglary in 2005.

The task became a media scrum however and he completed his community service away from prying lenses inside the sanitation department's grounds.

Instead the AP reports that she would prefer something more "palatable" such as fund-raising for cancer.

London-born Campbell could face up to seven years in jail if she is convicted.
