NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt has deflected growing complaints that television programs may be contributing to violent crime in America. Speaking to the winter meeting of the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, CA on Sunday, Greenblatt remarked, I'm not a psychologist, but I don't think you can make the leap of shows about serial killers causing the violence that we have in our country. ... There are many other factors, from mental illness to guns. Besides, he observed, violence on television is tame compared with what is shown in movies and videogames. (He spoke on the same day that it was announced that the slasher flick Texas Chainsaw 3D had earned a better-than-expected $20 million on its opening weekend at the box office.) NBC has the series Hannibal, based on the Silence of the Lambs character, in the works. NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke told the writers that the series, which is currently in production, could debut later in the season or possibly in the summer.
