Actor Neil Patrick Harris is returning to the New York stage to star as a transgender East German singer in the Broadway debut of cult rock musical Hedwig And The Angry Inch.
The Smurfs star will don drag to lead the cast in the show revival, which is based on John Cameron Mitchell's book of the same name. The author/actor starred in the original stage production, which premiered Off Broadway in 1998, and also took on the title role for the 2001 film adaptation.
Giving his blessing for Harris to take over the job, Mitchell says, "Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?"
A statement released by Harris reads: "It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the journey."
Hedwig and the Angry Inch will launch next spring (14), although the theatre and further casting details have yet to be announced.
Harris is no stranger to the Broadway community - he performed in a 2004 production of Assassins, and previously starred in Proof (2000) and Cabaret (1998), while he hosted the Tony Awards for the fourth time earlier this month (Jun13).
