Legendary playwright Neil Simon has dismissed modern comedy, claiming it's not funny because comedians can't act.

Neil - who scripted the classics BAREFOOT IN THE PARK and THE ODD COUPLE - reckons serious actors are more reliable than comedians.

The 76-year-old says, "I think Jim Carrey is maybe the best comedian, but I don't look for comedians - they are never in my plays.

"I always looked for really good actors who are better at doing comedy than comics, who can't do the serious parts of the movie.

"I'm not sure I've seen a movie lately that I thought was truly funny. The comedy seems mostly to be about cars crashing etc."
