Ailing South African leader Nelson Mandela has been awarded the freedom of a London borough in recognition of his contributions to the civil rights movement.

The former South African President, who is currently in a critical condition in hospital, has visited Brent a number of times, including a stop in 1990 for a concert at Wembley Stadium hosted by bosses of the Anti-Apartheid Movement (Aam).

Campaigners first proposed the honour in 1990, but it has finally been agreed after a "unanimous vote" by councillors of Brent.

Suresh Kamath, who worked with the Aam and introduced Mandela at Wembley, says, "Across the world people have recognised the importance of Nelson Mandela, the contribution that he's made to transform the society of South Africa, but also this contribution he's made to help Africa and the rest of the world.

"I'm really pleased and proud that the borough I live in is prepared to bestow this honour on Nelson Mandela."

The 94 year old has been under doctors' care at a hospital in Pretoria since 8 June (13), and his health is said to have taken a turn for the worse over the weekend (22-23Jun13).
