South African officials have dismissed reports suggesting ailing former President Nelson Mandela has been released from hospital.

The 95-year-old anti-apartheid hero has been under doctors' care since he was admitted to hospital with a recurring lung infection on 8 June (13).

Several news outlets including the Bbc quoted sources close to the leader as saying he had been discharged, but Mandela is still being treated, according to a statement from the office of President Jacob Zuma.

It reads, "The Presidency has noted incorrect media reports that former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital. (Mandela) is still in hospital in Pretoria, and remains in a critical but stable condition. At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions."

Mandela marked his 95th birthday in hospital on 18 July (13).
