Former South African leader Nelson Mandela has been admitted to hospital after suffering a recurrence of a lung infection.
The country's ex-president, 94, spent nearly three weeks under doctors' care in December (12) as he battled a lung condition, while he also underwent an operation to remove gallstones, and it was revealed on Thursday morning (28Mar13) that he is back under the care of doctors.
Mandela checked into a hospital late on Wednesday night (27Mar13), and President Jacob Zuma has urged the nation's residents to pray for the former leader.
In a statement, he writes, "We appeal to the people of South Africa and the world to pray for our beloved Madiba (Mandela) and his family and to keep them in their thoughts. We have full confidence in the medical team and know that they will do everything possible to ensure recovery."
It is the second hospital trip in less than a month for Mandela - he checked into a facility in Pretoria on 9 March (13) for undisclosed reasons but was released the following day.
