Eli Roth

Biography

Eli Roth (born 18.04.1972) Eli Roth is an award-winning American director and actor famous for his work on the movie 'Hostel' and 'Cabin Fever'.

Childhood: Eli Roth was born in Newton, Massachusetts to Jewish parents. His parents are psychiatrist Dr. Sheldon Roth and painter Cora Roth. He was inspired to embark on a filmmaking career after watching Ridley Scott's 'Alien' when he was 8. He attended Newton South High School and the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. While at University, he ran film producer Frederick Zollo's office. One of his first jobs when he moved to LA was as an extra on legal drama 'The Practice'.

Film Career: Towards the end of university, Eli Roth wrote and directed a movie called 'Restaurant Dogs' after watching Quentin Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs' and it was nominated for a Student Academy Award. He met 'The Elephant Man' director David Lynch through his work with Zollo and subsequently met composer Angelo Badalamenti through him, who went on to write the music for Roth's first feature film 'Cabin Fever'. He moved to LA in 1999 and made a series of short animations for Mandalay Sports Entertainment with Noah Belson called 'Chowdaheads' which was meant to air between 'WCW Monday Nitro' wrestling matches but never did because the CEO at the time was fired. The pair also made a stop motion animation series called 'The Rotten Fruit'. Roth's first big break was with 2003's 'Cabin Fever'; a horror movie inspired loosely by a skin infection he caught horseriding in Iceland. It was made with a $1.5 million budget and grossed 35 million worldwide on its release. Quentin Tarantino called it his favourite new film in 2004 and dubbed Roth 'the future of horror'. His next film, 'Hostel', was number one at the box office when it opened in 2006 and grossed $80 million at the box office worldwide - 20 times the movie's budget. Roth has been credited with the creation of sub-genre 'torture porn' or 'gorno' which refers to the excitement built up in a movie from excessive violence. 'Hostel' was voted as Best Horror Film of 2007 in Empire Magazine. 'Hostel: Part II' did not fare as well as the first movie at the box office, though it is thought that an online leak of the movie resulting in millions of illegal downloads contributed to the poor sales. In 2007, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed horror double feature called 'Grindhouse' which included Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' and Tarantino's 'Death Proof'. Each feature was preceded by a series of fake movie trailers; Roth created a trailer for a movie called 'Thanksgiving' in the 'Death Proof' segment (as well as also appearing in that movie) but is set to release a full length version of it in 2013.

Other Career Centures: Eli Roth is producing martial arts film 'The Man with the Iron Fist' directed by and starring The RZA. Quentin Tarantino is also said to be involved. Roth has contributed to DVD extras and audio commentaries of various films including horror flicks Juan Piquer Simon's 'Pieces' and Lucio Fulci's 'Cat in the Brain' as well as Troma's 'Blood Sucking Freaks'. He voiced the lumberjack in animated comedy 'Disaster!' He also co-starred in Tarantino's WW2 movie 'Inglourious Basterds' alongside Brad Pitt and had a cameo in 'Piranha 3DD'. He produced 'The Last Exorcism' with Eric Newman and Marc Abraham which was released in 2010. He also worked on the sequel 'The Last Exorcism Part 2' which will be released in March 2013. Roth hosted an episode of the Discovery Channel's 'Curiosity' series called 'How Evil Are You?' which saw him explore the science behind evil and undergo a brain scan. He has written and stars in Chile based horror 'Aftershock' which will be released in 2013.

Last month a controversial NSFW video leaked online, directed by Eli Roth, which depicted singer Lana Del Rey being raped. The footage was said to have been shot for a Marilyn Manson music video, however the singer’s camp quickly released a statement denying his involvement. Now Manson has finally spoken out about the video and the exact nature of his involvement.

Marilyn MansonMarilyn Manson has spoken for the first time about the controversial Lana Del Rey video

Back when the video leaked online in November, a statement from Manson’s camp read, “"Manson did not direct this, shoot it, nor was it for a Marilyn Manson video or outtake footage made by him or to be used by him with his music.” Adding, “It must be a fan video splicing up old Manson video footage with someone else's Lana Del Rey footage.”

Steven Spielberg On The Future Of The Film Industry: An 'Implosion Is Due'

Steven Spielberg George Lucas Eli Roth

Steven Spielberg talks about the difficulties of showing anything other than big budget, mainstream films in the cinema. He was addressing film students at the opening of the University of South California's School of Cinematic Arts building and warned that an 'implosion' within the film industry is due owing to difficulties with finance.

Spielberg warned USC students it is highly likely that a few big budget films would, within a short period, flop which would alter the industry forever. Spielberg's argument is that studios, fearful of loss, are only willing to make films which will ensure a large profit margin. He commented on how finance fixated the film industry has become claiming 'a studio would rather invest $250m in one film for a real shot at the brass ring than make a whole bunch of really interesting, deeply personal - and even maybe historical - projects'.

Spielberg also warns that the viewing public may have to foot the bill for big budget films. He uses Iron Man 3 and Lincoln as examples whereby cinema-goers would pay more than double ($25) than those seeing Lincoln ($7). This is in proportion with what they cost to make. Production costs for Lincoln were around $65 million whereas Iron Man's came in around $200 million.

The Last Exorcism Part II Review

Good

When you qualify your movie as the "last" anything, a sequel seems a bit out of the question, but these new filmmakers have essentially relegated the 2010 original to a mere backstory. They have moved on from the video-cam format and the whole debunking premise to make a much more straightforward horror romp. And while it's packed with cliches, it heads full-speed into a final act that's jaw-droppingly bonkers enough to make this a guilty pleasure.

After the carnage of that farmhouse exorcism, Nell (Bell) is the only survivor. She's taken to a New Orleans halfway house with other battered women, who begin to teach her how to live her life after growing up in isolation. She still has a sense of her religious roots, but learns to enjoy pop music and even starts flirting with a cute handyman (Clark). Even though she wants to believe that her demon-possession wasn't real, it becomes apparent that maybe that previous exorcism didn't quite take. "A piece of him is still inside you," says an occult expert (Jensen), completely without irony. Indeed the demon is back with a vengeance, and he has something awful in mind.

Filmmaker Gass-Donnelly keeps the atmosphere tense, throwing in elements from every horror film in recent memory, including creepy masked figures, staticky broadcasts, insidious phone calls, buzzing houseflies and even a sassy psychic (Riggs). The soundtrack is full of creep-out noises, while the images are intercut with flickers of the previous film. But all of this is done in that bland Hollywood style that makes us jump without actually freaking us out. Thankfully, the film has Bell on board to deliver a performance much better than the movie deserves: she's genuinely unsettling as the tormented innocent.

'Hemlock Grove', the new supernatural horror series from Eli Roth, has been announced by Netflix to have had more viewers on opening on April 19th 2013 than Kevin Spacey's 'House of Cards'.

Netflix has become an immediate 'box set' portal for new TV shows; no more waiting until the end of the season to view back-to-back episodes of your favourite show, you can watch them all as soon as the show is available thanks to a new perspective of TV culture. Earlier this year the streaming site debuted the entire first series of Kevin Spacey's new political drama 'House of Cards' with promises to release the second series on its completion. Although it fared well in reviews, it has been overshadowed by the next show to jump on the box set bandwagon, 'Hemlock Grove', which Netflix reveals did rather better in viewing figures, despite receiving a mixed critical reception. 'We're very pleased with its early performance', Netflix said in their quarterly earnings statement. 'Hemlock Grove was viewed by more members globally in its first weekend than was 'House of Cards' and has been a particular hit among young adults.'
