Award-winning documentary FINAL SOLUTION has been banned in India after censors ruled the content of religious rioting between Hindus and Muslims could "trigger off violence".

Director Rakesh Sharma's film depicts the 2002 clashes following an arson attack on a train in the western Indian state of Gujurat, which saw over 1,000 people dead.

The CENTRAL BOARD OF FILM CERTIFICATION has imposed a comprehensive ban on the movie, which won the documentary and critics awards at the Hong Kong INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, and the Wolfgang Staudte and Special Jury awards at the Berlin INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL earlier this year (04).

The board said, "Final Solution is highly provocative and may trigger off unrest and communal violence."

Sharma fumes, "This is hogwash. The board also says that the film will affect friendly relations with some neighbouring countries and that the film attacked the basic principle of the Indian constitution, which is national integration.

"People who make hate speeches should be banned and not the film maker who records it."
