Batman Begins At Top Of North American Box Office

Batman BEGINS has soared to the top of the North American box office, after earning an estimated $46.9 million (GBP24.6 million) during its first weekend on release.

According to studio estimates, the superhero movie starring Welsh actor Christian Bale has grossed $71.1 million (GBP37.4 million) since opening on Wednesday (15JUN05).

Last weekend's box office champion, Mr And Mrs Smith, slipped to number two with $27.3 million (GBP14.3 million), followed by animated adventure Madagascar with $11.1 million (GBP5.8 million).

Star Wars: EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH and THE LONGEST YARD round out the top five with $9.7 million (GBP5.1 million) and $8 million (GBP4.2 million) respectively.

The only other new release of the weekend - Hilary Duff and HEATHER LOCKLEAR's romantic comedy THE PERFECT MAN - opened in seventh place with a disappointing take of just $5.5 million (GBP2.8 million).
