Beastie Boys Win Copyright Battle
Rappers THE Beastie Boys have won a court action which ends a lengthy copyright infringement battle.
JAMES W NEWTON JR sued the trio in 2000, claiming they infringed "the heart" of his flute composition CHOIR on their PASS THE MIC hit - even though the Beastie Boys won a license from ECM RECORDS to sample the sound recording.
They looped a six-second, three-note sequence throughout Pass the Mic.
A furious Newton claimed the trio should have asked for his permission directly before using the sample he composed.
But a judge has now ended the court battle, stating there was no infringement because the use of the sample was minimal.12/11/2003 09:10
