Beyonce Knowles, Justin Timberlake and Coldplay were the big winners at last night's (28AUG03) MTV_video_music_awards">MTV Video Music Awards, taking home three awards apiece.

While the stars picked up awards for best choreography, best pop video and breakthrough video respectively, eight-times-nominated rapper Missy Elliott scooped the coveted Video of the Year award for her smash hit WORK IT. Elliott, who also picked up the best hip-hop video award, is a first-time winner at the VMAs, despite her numerous nominations.

The ceremony, which took place at New York's Radio City Music Hall, also saw British rockers Duran Duran clinch their first ever VMA honour when they were handed a surprise lifetime achievement award by Kelly Osbourne and AVRIL LAVIGNE.

While comedian Chris Rock left audience members open-mouthed with jibes at such stars as R Kelly, Paula Abdul and 50 CENT, Madonna and Britney Spears provided the real shock of the night when they locked lips in a raunchy display while opening the show with Christina Aguilera.

Destiny's Child frontwoman Knowles also provided a performance highlight when she descended from the ceiling to sing her hit songs Baby Boy and CRAZY IN LOVE.
