Book Assesses One-Hit Wonders
Fleeting hitmakers THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN, Nena and THE KNACK are being celebrated in a new book commemorating the best pop one-hit wonders of all time.
THE ONE AND ONLY, itself named after British pop star Chesney Hawkes' 1990 number one smash, details one-off pop smashes that have gone on to become classics in their own right.
Author TOM BROMLEY names Thunderclap Newman's 1969 hit SOMETHING IN THE Air as the best one-hit wonder ever. Second comes 1979's MY SHARONA by THE KNACK, while NENA's 1984 monster success 99 RED BALLOONS is named eighth best.
Elsewhere, CLIVE DUNN's GRANDAD from 1970 is unveiled as the worst one-off in history, while Billy Ray Cyrus' 1992 track ACHY BREAKY HEART is named the eighth worst ever.
Bromley says, "Some of the songs in the book you'll remember like old friends. Others, you'll groan at the memory. There are great songs here too."28/10/2004 14:10
