LATEST: British chart-toppers Busted have finally announced the band are splitting for good - so singer Charlie Simpson can devote himself to his rock outfit Fightstar.

Despite months of denials and speculation, the CRASHED THE WEDDING trio held a London press conference this morning (14JAN05) to confirm they are officially disbanding.

Busted shot to stardom in 2002 and have since scored four UK number one hits and two gongs at last year's (04) Brit Awards.

But Simpson has repeatedly clashed with bandmates James Bourne and MATT Willis over his desire to ditch his youthful, pop image to tour with his side-project, Fightstar.

Simpson told reporters, “I'm incredibly proud of everything that we've achieved in Busted. We've enjoyed some of the best times in our lives together.

"I wouldn't change one single bit of it. This has been a really difficult decision and I hope the fans will understand."
