Brokeback Mountain Lands Golden Globes In Trouble

US Christian groups have accused the organisers of the Golden Globe Awards of unfairly favouring homosexual movies over commercial success.

Monday's (16JAN06) star-studded event saw gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain take home four awards, while DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star Felicity Huffman won Best Actress for her portrayal of a transsexual with a gay prostitute son in new movie Transamerica.

Concerned Women for America member JANICE CROUSE says, "Once again the media elites are proving that their pet projects are more important than profit. None of these movies is a box office hit.

"Brokeback mountain has barely topped $25 million in ticket sales. If America isn't watching these films, why are they winning the awards."

Stephen Bennett of America's Straight Talk Radio, yesterday (17JAN06) declared, "When Hollywood is pumping out anti-family movies with sexually explicit, twisted and perverse themes that glorify homosexuality, transsexuality and every other kind of sexual immorality and then awarding itself for doing so, Middle America better take note.

"Hollywood exposed it's own corrupt agenda. (It) is no doubt out on a mission to homosexualise America."

I very much disagree. As was already stated above, awards aren't based on box office success. Awards are given for outstanding work in the field. Even if awards were given for ticket sales, "Brokeback Mountain" still broke box office records when it became the highest grossing film per screen. This won best picture because it was, in fact, the best picture of 2005 and, as far as I can tell, its detractors are mainly people who have not seen the film at all but rail against it for its "immorality".

3 cheers for free speech, even if it is from wing nuts like stephen bennett. he serves a role, sort of defining the bizarre edge of the christian right for purposes of comparison. if you read any of their content, though, it boils down basically to the intellectual heft of the guy who commented on here "wrump wrangler." LOL

Just thought all those religious homophobes in the US would like to know that here in the UK 'Brokeback' is the highest grossing film for the second week running. Even the newly elected leader of the Conservative (?) Party has been to see it and told the BBC how brilliant he thought it was.By the way, it's a film about LOVE and it's effect on peoples lives. And it's the best movie of this year, and a lot of others come to that.

The movie was so well done and its so touching and moving, why would anyone denied the award winners for just displaying a homosexual agenda? Brokeback mountain was banned in some theaters and is not world wide yet and its making lots of money, top rating and very good comments from everyone who has watched the movie, dont comment on something you haven't seen, if you think that it was a shock seeing 2 guys make out "wow" all i got to say is that i saw more man action in yesterdays football game, this movie was amazing and i give it 2 thumbs up. Brokeback mountain is and will be the major cowboy buzz. What is the buzz all about? well just go see the movie for yourself and find out. ; )

Oh...AGREED, AGREED?!@%? What, is this some kind of christian-right wacko website? The idiot from Concerned Women of America ignorantly states that people aren't watching these films. Oh really? That's why Brokeback Mountain has had the highest per-screen average of the top 10 films in the last several weeks. This film has only been showing at about 600 theatres, compared with King Kong's thousands of theatres. That makes it even more impressive. Maybe, just maybe, all those film critics who across the board gave top accolades to Brokeback Mountain did so because it is one of the most poignant, moving films ever made. Get over your homophobia.....it's so white trash! And please don't again start citing your Bible....you do know this book is nothing more than a piece of fiction written by ordinary men in a time way different than ours. This book also condoned slavery and stoning people for working on Sunday. It also had people who lived in a whale, and others who lived for 900 years....and on, and on, and on, etc. You people sound so crazy when you claim you alone know the answers and then go on to say that they come from this book.

I disagree. A good movie will recieve awards. Actors/actresses who give good performances will recieve awards. And about the following quote:"Brokeback mountain has barely topped $25 million in ticket sales. If America isn't watching these films, why are they winning the awards."I'm not so sure exactly how much money the movie earned at the box office, but $25 million in ticket sales while being released only at close to 700 theatres is damn good. And it truly is an oustanding film, and a LOT of film critics think so as well.
