James Caan moved out of the Playboy mansion because he feared he'd never be able to live in the real world again if he outstayed his welcome there.

Pal and Playboy boss Hugh Hefner invited the actor to stay at the mansion after Caan was left homeless by a divorce battle in the mid-1970s, and THE GODFATHER star moved in for a whole year.

He recalls, "Hef didn't want me to leave because I guess I brought a lot of levity to the place. Back then, it was the greatest nightclub in the world.

"It got to the point where I thought, 'Why don't I just commit suicide because it ain't getting any better than this.'"
