British comedian Tommy Cooper has been voted the nation's favourite funnyman of all time - 20 years after his death.

Cooper, who died on stage in 1984, has beaten a number of living comics, including Billy Connelly and Lee Evans, to be crowned Britain's READER'S DIGEST magazine's top joke-teller.

A Reader's Digest spokesperson says, "Comedy fashions come and go but as far as the British public is concerned you obviously can't beat Tommy Cooper's classic one-liners. For Cooper to still be popular, even among younger voters, is incredible."

The Top Ten Funnyman are:

1: TOMMY COOPER

2: Peter Kay

3: BILLY CONNELLY

4: MORECAMBE AND WISE

5: Bob Monkhouse

6: Ken Dodd

7: ROY 'CHUBBY' BROWN
