Eminem Ignored Bono's Live 8 Calls - Comments and Message Board

I totally mucked up my last post in response to HYPERTHREAD's remarks on John Lennon, the song "Imagine," and our "sinful nature."MY COMMENTS:Taking refuge in religiously fundamentalist approaches when confronted by the complexities and "chaos" of the post-modern world is totally understandable.Like the Taliban, Al Qaida and many Christian sects, HYPERTHREAD has put his wagons in a circle. The problem with his approach, however, is in keeping the evildoers from penetrating the defenses one also can inadvertently keep out the real, the true and the moral as well.Actually, Lennon's song clearly resonates with mainstream Christian theological scholarship. We all need to be vigilant about taking care to separate what Jesus actually said to what was said about him in the New Testament. Turning to the Psalms or to the apostle Paul are certainly useful, but they must be seen as the varnish which overlays the authentic words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth. As Lennon once observed in his "Beatle days," Christianity IS "vanishing and shrinking." Jesus himself, Lennon once remarked, was "okay" but has been obscured by the density of his followers who came after him."Bible Study" is actually "studying the Bible." We all need to strike a blow for biblical literacy and let the real Jesus speak for himself.

Why is this news now??? live 8 was months ago. Is Bono trying to get some more press on the back of Eminem? "Eminem was rude and never called me back" So what, get over it. I'd wager that Eminem or Bono wouldn't return any of my phone calls. And why are a bunch of these comments either complaining about George Bush or trying to defend him? Grow up. Bush didn't block Eminem's phone calls to Bono because he hates black people. Or any other pretend reason you can come up with to link him to events that he has nothing to do with. Go make some fake memos and maybe I'll listen.

maybe some of you should 1) learn to read carefully; 2) read and understand the Constitution of the United States; 3) read and understand the Declaration of Independence; 4) read about and understand what democracy really means; 5) read about and understand that a free market and competition are the foundations of our free economy; 6) realize and understand that companies, such as halliburton, are being allowed to sidestep the tenets of a free market via the elimination of competition for the the work they have been handed. in addition:the original point that i was responding to was that clinton evaded the draft for the vietnam war ... i am fully aware that we now have an all-volunteer army... my point was that when there WAS a draft, cheney and others avoided serving their country via numerous deferrments which were not available to the average joe on the street. gore could have sought deferrments, but instead he served his time in vietnam, john kerry also had the resources to obtain deferrments, but he also chose to serve his country in vietnam, as did max clelland and other democrats (and republicans of course)... but where was cheney, where was bush and others? if you are going to judge bill clinton for avoiding the draft, then put cheney and others under the same light of scrutiny.my point regarding the iraq war was the means by which it was presented to the american people: via deception and false information. colin powell admitted that himself and admitted that he embarrassed himself by presenting false information at the UN hearings. my point had nothing to do with who is and who is not serving in this war. i have huge respect for those who have chosen to risk their lives for what they believe, such as headmeister's brother and brother in law. headmeister's relatives are men of bravery and conviction and high caliber. if only our current leaders had an ounce of the amount of courage and conviction these men have. but these men, instead, when it was NOT an all-volunteer army, they chose to do whatever they could to avoid it serving their country. rather than making rational, well-thought-out arguments for your beliefs, you people have chosen to throw stones at me. i believe that that is because you are either too lazy or are incapable of thinking through the issues here.I realize none of this has anything to do with bono or eminem or geldof of live 8. and this is my last post. i do suggest you people do you civic duty as americans and understand the foundations of our national democracy, our free market, our right to free speech, and not cast dispersions at people who apparently care a lot more about the inherent values of America than you do.

All I have to say is this: My brother served 2 tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom, one in the U.S., and one in Iraq. Know why he was sent to war? Not because Bush and Cheney sent him there, but because he signed himself up for it when he joined the reserves. My step brother has now been sent off to war in Iraq. Know why he was sent to war? Not because Bush and Cheney sent him there, but because he signed himself up for it when he joined the Army.If you don't want to go to war - and who does - then don't sign yourself up for military duty. PeriodBTW - my brothers totally agree.Thank you,Headmeister

Headmeister's picture

uh, excuse me? i believe superhawk dick cheney also avoided military duty, but he certainly delights in putting our young men in harm's way, doesn't he? and mr. wolfowitz? i don't see any of his purple hearts. mr. rove? now what year was he in boot camp? and was it camp lejeune? fort bliss? uh, oh yea, he didn't serve his country either. mr. libby ... let's see ... umm, hmm, i don't think so. mr. delay? nope. i could go on and on listing the Republican leaders who chose not to serve their country in the military. so, let's put that argument to bed, shall we?and by the way, whether you like it or not, bill clinton was duly, and shall I say legitimately, elected TWICE to be the President of the United States. he was not placed in office by a decision made by the supreme court. as such, it is his constitutional right to receive secret service protection, just as George W. will have when he leaves office, George H.W. is certainly enjoying, as well as Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. bill clinton is, as well, now that he is out of office, part of the "free market" for the exchange ideas and products ... (and, by the way, it seems that the concept of a free market has been lost on you people on the "right" ... strange isn't it that the "left" is now carrying the traditional American values and the right has trashed them all ... but i digress). And, as such, it is the private sector that has determined that there is value to what he has to say ... and they are paying him, of their own free will, quite to continue to make speeches --- and believe me, republicans are forking over the dollars to hear what he has to say. That is because his experience is valuable and worth listening to ...which is rewarded in a democratic, free market.

Floot---Clinton's whole life is a lie and he personally committed all the crimes you liberals try to pin on Bush yet the closes you got to Bush is his VP's Cheef of Staf yet. Must be killing you that we (GOP) have an angel (Bush) representing us in the White House while you loosers are stuck with nothing but the memories of a jerk (Clinton) who's only hope to gain any spotlight at allthese days is to kiss up to Bush senior.

Bushie,I make no excuses for "my man" Bill Clinton (who is, by the way, NOT). He did what he did and he paid a price. However, what Bill Clinton did utterly and absolutely pales against what has happened within the administration of your man George W. and HIS men Cheney, Rumsefeld, etc. It becoming apparent that they brought this country into a war in Iraq, from which it is unlikely we will be able to remove ourselves for many, many years, on the basis of lying to the American people. And, in addition, how do you explain away that hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer dollars are going to your man Dick Cheney's former firm, Halliburton, and its subsidiaries, on NO BID, NON-COMPETITIVE awards for reconstruction work around the globe ... ??? How are they POSSIBLY getting away with that.Ultimately, it's the American people who are going to have to answer for the entrenched corruption of this administration. As Americans we need to stand up to your MEN (Condi, Gale Norton, etc., included) and make them do what the Founders of this nation established as necessary for the effective functioning of a democracy: providing the truth to the American people so that the people can make up their own minds and either keep a good administration in office, or kick out the people like GWB and his crowd when they step beyond the limits of their powers. And I predict the "demonrats" will be back in full sway after the the next couple of election cycles.Open your eyes Bushie, or come down and visit us on earth, here in America, and observe how the current administration is functioning with impunity outside the boundaries of the American justice system and outside the bounds of the American Constitution. One does not need to be Republican to love his/her country and want to ensure that it continues to be strong and respected around the world. This administration is losing on both these counts.

FLUTIE-Nice try. Liberals are morally bankrupt and corrupt. Your main man Slick Willy was impeached, in case you forgot. He also paid a hefty fine for lying under oath, submitting a false affidavit, etc, etc. He was also disbarred. There has only been one person indicted in the White House, and it was on a trumped-up charge. Last time I looked, one is innocent until proven guilty. Only a handful of left-wing nuts think otherwise. Luckily, most Americans see that. Bush may be polling in the 40's, but the Democrats are polling in last place in the 20's. No ideas and no future...

On the surface one might say that Lennon was a visionary who saw past the evils in the world. The problem though is mankind is inherently flawed, and corrupt. Not because, as some would say we have learned hate, but because we have as the bible says, a sin nature. The answer to John Lennon's question is answered by Jesus Christ. Psalm 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God. He also said: Rom 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Bono has never ever "supported right-wing Republican candiates" -- he was invited to the White House because Bush needed the photo op, and Bono needed the goodwill for DATA and his other causes... Bono and Bush do not even like each other but they are smart enough to use each other... as any bonehead should be able to figure out... that is what makes the world go around, not nasty nit picking...

Dear Bush Rules,I'd rather be "bankrupt" than "corrupt" - at least one can come back from bankruptcy, corruption is a deterioration of moral and ethical fiber. How do possibly you maintain your stance when just about every key member of this administration is facing indictment or has already been indicted? Or do you live on another planet?

Bono is one smart dude. He realizes George Bush continues to run rings around the Liberals/Demonrats in this country. For all of the noise they make, the Demonrats are out of power and will continue to be for years. They are totally bankrupt of ideas and hate the greatest country in the world. Go Bush nd Bono!!

Uh, well, perhaps Eminem was aware that Bono and George W. Bush were becoming "good buddies" and that Bono was, as well, supporting right-wing Republican candidates in the US ... Believe me, if Bono called me I wouldn't return his phone calls either. AND, just because poor people in Africa are wearing Eminem T-shirts does not oblige Eminem in any way, morally, spiritually or professionally to sign onto the Bono Megalomania Charade ... He (Eminem) is touching these peoples' lives in ways that Bono could only wish he could.

Smokey,On your comment..“Caring musicians who have to have an above average intelligence to earn a spot on the stage”Wow, talk about a bunch of logical fallacies, and this coming from someone who buys into the intellectual elitism of the radical left and entertainment industry.Did the “artists” who performed on stage have to pass an IQ test, or submit and essay on the current geopolitical situation in Africa? Or is your assumption that they are “above average intelligence” just presumed (like everything else)???How do you know the musicians actually care, because they tell you they do?What a tool, most musicians are self absorbed elite millionaires who can’t put the needle down long enough to care for themselves, let alone a starving corrupt continent (how is that for presumption).Elitism sucks and MetroSpy is right, until the dictator scumbags who rule the African nations are eliminated, no amount of fake “I care about Africa” concerts will fix the problem.

I don't remember seeing any "communist-loving hippies" at a Live 8 concert... mostly I saw caring musicians who have to be above average intelligent to have earned a spot on that stage...and we can always find an excuse not to help somebody when they are down...

It is possible that Eminem thinks, like many others, that you can't solve the poverty problems in Africa until you get rid of the corruption in those governments. Millionaire rock stars can dance around and sing until their eyes snap shut but the truth is, hippies never solved anything.

Maybe Eminem's lack of answer was his answer. It's fine that Bono is spending this time being concerned about the cause of world poverty. (Some might even call it commendable). However, it's just that -- his cause. If a person isn't likewise convicted to take part, then said individual shouldn't. To do so would be disingenuous.
