Emmy Speeches To Be Cut

Bosses of America's prestigious Emmy Awards are cutting down on the number of acceptance speeches, in an effort to entice more TV viewers.

Only 14 million viewers tuned in to watch the three-hour prize-giving event last year (04) - marking the Emmys' second-lowest ratings ever - and chiefs are desperate to make the telecast more exciting.

Therefore, they're calling a halt to the number of writers and directors who take to the stage to make spontaneous speeches after winning awards.

TV stars will not be affected by the planned changes for the 18 September (05) event.

Dick Askin, chairman and chief executive of the ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES, says the ceremony will continue to recognise the best in TV but at a "better pace".

He adds, "We have set a course which we believe will result in a new and invigorated Emmy Awards telecast."
