Fire In Pete Townshend's Historic Mansion

The Who rocker Pete Townshend was left shaken yesterday (04JUL05) when a fire raged through his historic $5.3 million (GBP3 million) London mansion.

The luxurious home - once owned by poet LORD ALFRED TENNYSON - is the home of the PINBALL WIZARD guitarist's estranged wife KAREN, but she was holidaying in Italy when the blaze broke out.

The flames ravaged the period, destroying irreplaceable antique fittings and priceless furniture in addition to demolishing the roof and the entire third floor.

Townshend says, "It's a great shame the fire damaged the place. Tennyson used to live there but not during his happiest times. My wife was in the process of having it redeveloped."
