America's leading gay and lesbian organisation has given Ang Lee's controversial new movie Brokeback Mountain a boost by calling the movie "the most poignant love story".

Officials at the Gay + Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) are endorsing the film, which features love scenes between straight actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, who play gay cowboys.

And they go so far as the hail the release of the film later this month (DEC05) as "a historic moment in film history".

GLAAD president NEIL GIULIANO says, "This film has tremendous potential to connect with audiences gay and straight alike. People will relate to these characters and to the emotional authenticity of their story.

"What Brokeback Mountain does is allow audiences to experience, on an intensely emotional level, how ignorance and intolerance can force people to deny their love and deny who they are."

GLAAD bosses are providing a resource kit for critics featuring information on real-life gay cowboys and the rural gay experience.

Staying out of the gay debate, I think the main point to be made here is the one made by maphere, who said that only gay men are going to go see this movie. I think that's basically correct after opening weekend (the film does have a huge amount of buzz, which may attract curiosity-seekers). After that, gay men and maybe a few thousand straight women will go, and a few hundred of those will manage to drag their boyfriends. Yeah, it'll make some more money in New York and L.A., where most of us just want to see a good movie and don't get hung up on taboo subjects, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be a $16-20 million gross at most.

To all you left wing liberal socialists.. not all Bible Thumpers,as you refer to them as,are worried about the gay life style. If you would open your ear holes you would hear they do not like homosexuallity but harbor no aggresive or hateful feelings for the person. You are not that important there are a lot of other things more important then a persons bedroom partner preferences. I am a straight man and I have no quarell with the gay community other than the fact they want preferential traetment because of their sexual preferences.I personally know several gay couples who have provided for each others future security and other financial considerations with out worrying about someone giving it to them like responsible, reasonably people should do.I am so sick and tiered of hearing that if I don't agree with the gay movement I am a homaphob,or if I don't agree with a minorty leadership then I am racist. Grow up and stop hollering and kicking your feet like little children take responsibility for your self and your own actions and stop blaming us for your problems.

Response to "Idontchoosetobegayijustam" bible litterally....?Jesus gave us the New Testament and fulfilled the Jewish law. Jesus is the fulfillment of the laws intended purpose and revelation. Jesus is the true Temple. Jesus became the Lamb instead of real burnt offerings. All things clean and unclean are now the things that come out of the mouth and not those things that go into the mouth. The Sabbath day is in Christ and he is our REST (Sabbath means "rest"). And... yes the New Testament frowns on seeking to glorify yourself with jewlery, costly clothing and fancy hair doo's (We believe these things in our family). But there are a lot of Christians who are worldly and seek to look, dress, and talk like worldy people. Please don't let the blind lead you into a ditch. Look at Jesus and the apostles for an example of truth.I could quote scripture, but I do not think you would really care... because you are just quoting parts of scripture to create a smoke screen to justify being a homosexual.Jesus said "I don't judge you, but the WORD I have spoken to you will judge you in that day". So, I feel the same way. I just tell you the obvious truth that God is not pleased and condemns homosexual behavior in the scriptures. Any honest student of scripture knows that simple teaching. It is not an honest statement to even suggest that God endorses the gay life style in scripture. Please quote the scriptures when you are ready to believe them and live by them. Until then, you have no right to quote something you don't believe in and just want to use to justify an abomination.God loves all the little boys and girls who cry out to him for healing and repentence. God does not like folks who twist HIS WORD to say something HE never meant. In Christ stead, I emplore you to leave HIS WORD out of this. It would be wise to let God be Holy and His WORD be Holy. He loves you and wants the best for you. He says to repent because it the door to our freedom.Eastexas

Gay sex isn't sex, it's sex play. I always though when you loved someone, you wanted the best for them. It isn't necessary to have sex with them. This sex play offers no chance for children--the best thing in life.Sexual and social experiments involving children is not a loving thing to do to children.O.

To Imassuming...Hey, good to talk with you again. I read your comments and I wanted to respond about how many of us straight men respond when we see gay men kissing or whatever. It is disgusting to me, not because the people are disgusting, but the act is so opposite of what of my personal desires. It's like watching people eat cow brains on "FEAR FACTOR", it repulses me. I was not taught to hate gays and as I mentioned before I have good friends that I frequently get together with who are gay. But my response to gay sex is negative. Even though I can cognitively realize that they enjoy it and even love each other there's not an ounce of my being that is drawn to what you would consider the most attractive man in the world let alone the idea of being intimate with a him...yuck. I imagine you have the same perspective towards women. This is why I don't want to see the movie. I don't relate to two men romantically loving each other and I have no desire to watch them have sex. I don't want to see King Kong either as I don't relate to an ape romantically involved with a woman.Bottom line, it is not immoral nor intolerant to be disgusted by things that are repulsive to you. Watching humans eat cow brains is not interesting just as watching men kiss is not interesting to me.This is why I think the movie is going to tank. Straight men genuinely don't want to see other men kissing even if they're tolerant, and most straight women aren't interested in it either, no matter how the movie is framed, everybody knows it's for the gay community. I'm disappointed that it received so many Oscar nods as it seems more appearant that Hollywood is full of their own ideology. I realize I've not seen the movie and not necessarily in position to question them, but it's hard not to view Hollywood as a political machine.Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, please don't take it personally if we don't enjoy gay sex, it just doesn't appeal straight men.

You know what I think? I don't think it matters what I think. Find a story from a mediocre magazine on a subject that most people don’t care to hear about. Make a movie. If the movie makes money then they will make more movies on the same subject. If the movie tanks then it is obvious that the American public is not interested in movies about fictitious homosexual cowboys from an author from Connecticut in the New Yorker magazine. I am sure that she probably interviewed many homosexual cowboys for research. Actually she says that the story began as an examination of country homophobia in the land of the Great Pure Noble Cowboy. So what better way to deride the myth than to cast the characters as homosexual lovers? Reminds me of the Last Temptation of Christ, what better way to destroy a myth than to portray the mythological person as having the very faults that most Americans find offensive. Hollywood does that a lot and I expect they will do it again. I am very curious to see how they manage to destroy Jan Pavel when they do a movie about him.

it seems unreasonable to demand that the 96% majority except and even embrace a lifestyle that if it were not for the extremely liberal media, most of us would not even know about, and now a big screen media movie? well i vote that the 4% go and enjoy themselves, have a blast! i can't imagine the pin dropping silence as you all watch 2 men have sex with eachother. tolerance? if you are tolerant then you will tolerate my opinion and the opinions of the 96% and just accept that most of us are not going to spend our hard earned money on pornography or accept a lifestyle that only underminds our community.

I don't agree or disagree with any comments, but I won't see 2 guys.. Here's my idea - Brokeback Mountain 2 - This time, it's 2-10 hot cowgirls. No arguments there!P.S. Carl really loved this movie. He has the screensaver and everything.
