Live 8 co-organiser SIR Bob Geldof fears the historic gig to lobby world leaders to help poverty-stricken Africa has been a "grotesque failure" - because he believes the G8 leaders are unwilling to support his Make Poverty History crusade.

The campaigning rocker planned Saturday's (02JUL05) star-studded concerts to persuade leaders of the eight largest industrial nations to cancel debt in the developing world, double the aid budget and rewrite global trade laws.

But he's concerned the leaders will not respond to the awareness-raising extravaganza when they meet in Edinburgh, Scotland on Wednesday (06JUL05) for the pivotal G8 Summit conference.

He says, "We have the potential to make this an historical G8, to be great, to be different, to actually make decisions.

"But I don't think they are anywhere near there. Certainly the British negotiators are right up to the wire trying to get a deal done. But I am not sure the others want to do it - which will be a grotesque failure."
