SIR Bob Geldof is furious Ethiopians are still starving 20 years after he raised awareness of their plight at the Live Aid charity concerts.

The former Boomtown Rat was spurred into action in 1984 after seeing a harrowing report about the devastating famine which gripped the African state, so raised $14.4 million (GBP8 million) with the DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? single and two LIVE AID concerts on 13 July 1985, which brought in a staggering $72 million (GBP40 million).

Geldof is currently in Ethiopia with British Prime Minister Tony Blair for this week's (begs04OCT04) COMMISSION FOR AFRICA summit, and is horrified people are still dying of starvation.

He complains, "Is it unacceptable that after 20 years people are still dying of hunger? Of course it is. When you go back to Tigray and see feeding stations with, say, 40,000 people and compare it to the million people I saw in 1985, it is progress of a kind.

"But is it enough? No, it's despicable. The reason we used the pun BAND AID is that you can't put a sticking plaster on a gaping wound."
