Hudson's Early Acting Start Blocked By Mother
Hudson, 25, appeared in a number of small films in her late teens until she landed her breakthrough role, and an OSCAR nomination, in Almost Famous.
But the blonde actress says her movie career could've started years earlier if her mother hadn't protected her from an often-disastrous early start in Hollywood.
She tells America's YM magazine, "There was never a time when I didn't know I was going to act.
"But the only time I did anything conscious was when I was 11 and I told my mom I wanted to audition. And she was like, 'Well, Katie, we'll see.'
"I tried out for something and ended up getting the part, but my mom basically said I couldn't do it. I forgot about it like a day later.
"I hadn't even started the search for my own identity or the process of becoming my own person. Every little girl needs to go through puberty before she starts playing characters. If trying to find out who you are at the same time, it's usually detrimental.
"So when people tell me their 14-year-old kids want to act, I just look at them and say, 'Don't do it! You've got so much time!'"
Hudson later began acting after she deferred her entry into NEW YORK UNIVERSITY to audition for roles.30/06/2004 09:32
