Former Iron Butterfly guitarist ERIK BRAUNN has died - he was 52.

The American axeman - who shot to fame playing on the band's 17-minute opus IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA - passed away on Friday night (25JUL03) from heart failure.

Braunn reunited with his former bandmates for a few performances after he left the group in 1969 but was left disappointed by a lack of respect for their artistic contribution.

He said, "Our sound paved the way for all the heavy metal bands that are popular today. Yet our records rarely get played, and most people regard us as a joke."
