LATEST: London West End musical Jerry Springer: THE OPERA has taken a step back from the brink of closure after the production team found ways to slash costs.

Poor audience figures last month (SEP04) and growing legal costs due to a court battle with Britain's DAILY MAIL newspaper over an article published earlier this year (JAN04) which claimed the show was losing $72,000 (GBP40,000) every week.

However, audience figures have since rallied and contractors and the creative crew members have agreed measures to cut costs to enable to show to continue its run at the Cambridge Theatre. The show opened last September (03) and producers want it to stay open until the court case is heard later this year (13DEC04).

The show's producers are seeking damages in the region of $792,000 (GBP440,000) because of the perceived effect the Mail article had on its reputation. The Daily Mail has since retracted its claim and apologised.

The show's producer, JON THODAY, says, "A final decision as to the future of Jerry Springer - The Opera will not be taken until the show's case with the Daily Mail is heard on 13 December 2004.

"In the meantime we would like to thank everyone who has made it possible to continue the run: the creative team, the writers and most importantly the public who are voting with their feet."
