GLADIATOR star Joaquin Phoenix wishes he was born 20 years earlier - because he's fixated with the music and movies of the 1960s and '70s.

The 29-year-old actor admits he's fascinated by the period and regularly dreams about going back in time to enjoy an array of historical events.

He says, "The only period I'm fascinated by is the late 60s and the 70s. That was the best time in film and music, two things I love.

"I wish I'd seen the Beatles play, and (LED) Zeppelin and (JIMI) Hendrix.

"I desperately wish I had been born 20 years earlier."
