Sir Paul McCartney fans in the rocker's native Liverpool are fuming after the local council reserved thousands of tickets for his hometown concert - a day before they went on general sale.

The former BEATLE will finish his BACK IN THE WORLD tour in the city on 1 June (03).

Of the 30,000 tickets available, 5,000 were given to LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL to ensure local people got the chance to see the city's favourite son perform. But 3,800 of the seats were snapped up by council staff yesterday (30APR03), 24 hours before tickets went on sale today (1MAY03).

A council statement explains, "Sir Paul McCartney wanted to ensure that tickets went to local people, and as the biggest employer on Merseyside the city council was an obvious choice.

"As a result, we were allocated 5,000 of the 30,000 tickets, which went up for sale through our call centre Liverpool Direct."

But local fans are furious - and John James of the LIVERPOOL Beatles APPRECIATION SOCIETY called the council's behaviour "absolutely disgraceful".

He adds, "I think the council have got a cheek. Everyone should have been given a chance to queue up today, the tickets should go to real fans."
