Man Arrested As Stones Show Gets Underway

The Rolling Stones' anticipated show in Toronto, Canada, saw an arrest and collapsing fans - just moments after the venue's gates opened yesterday (30JUL03).

Police estimated some 60,000 fans of the half a million expected for the concert were inside DOWNSVIEW PARK by midmorning, preparing themselves for 11 hours of music from midday.

But the orderly early entrance of fans was disrupted by a man who was arrested for assaulting a police officer, say authorities. And Toronto paramedics report that at least three people passed out and were treated on site, likely from dehydration.

An emergency services spokesman says, "As the day goes on, more and more people are going to be sick."

Other minor injuries reported were sprained ankles and minor cuts and scrapes because of the uneven nature of the field.

The concert, held on the 210th anniversary of the city's founding, is aimed at boosting Toronto's SARS-battered economy.

The Rolling Stones played a 90-minute set to close out the show. Other acts include Justin Timberlake, Flaming Lips, Isley Brothers and Jann Arden, who sang the national anthem to kick off the concert.
