Mary Wilson Celebrates New Copyright Law

Former SUPREME MARY WILSON is celebrating a legal victory after the law she has been pushing for in Illinois was passed. The law, which will take effect in January 2007, will require all live musical performers who use a name, song or persona of another group to advertise the show as a salute or tribute. The measure, signed into law on Wednesday (14JUN06) by Illinois Governor ROD BLAGOJEVICH, allows for violators to be fined up to $50,000 (GBP27,000) if they perform without a license and may be forced to pay damages to the original performers. The law was backed by the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame Foundation which has pushed for similar legislation in other states. Connecticut and Pennsylvania have all ready passed laws and the group hopes all US states will soon follow. Wilson previously pushed for laws protecting artists and failed in her attempts, but was able to convince the Illinois representatives in January (06). BOB CROSBY, President and CEO of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame Foundation, hails the new legislation for giving artists "long overdue respect, and will protect artists' legacies and give hope to the vocal group artists that have suffered identity theft."
