Rock legend Sir Paul McCartney has reportedly hired private detectives to spy on his son James.

According to British tabloid The Sun, the former beatle wants to make sure the 25-year-old is okay whilst Paul is on tour.

The tabloid says James - who lives near Paul and wife Heather Mills' apartment in Brighton, England - is watched by four detectives as he goes about his daily business, and has been since February 2003.

A source tells the newspaper, "Like any father Paul gets concerned about his kids even though they are all grown up.

"Paul sorted it knowing he'd be away for a while on tour."
