Scottish star Ewan McGregor's controversial movie has scored an early success at the EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL in his native country - by bagging a Best Picture gong.

Young Adam, which has been slammed by some critics for its explicitly sexual content, has been named the winner of the MICHAEL POWELL AWARD for Best New British Feature Film.

The Audience Award, which is voted for by festival-goers, was won by AFTER life, starring Kevin McKidd and Shirley Henderson.

This year's (03) festival ended last night (24AUG03) with a special screening of American Splendor, a film about American comic book writer HARVEY PEKAR.
