REM rocker Michael Stipe hopes to be remembered by future generations for some of the outrageous haircuts he wore in the Eighties.

The SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE singer blames "losing his mind" for the resultant barnets, which included one in the style of a monk.

Michael, 43, says, "I was well on my way to losing my mind, and that's what happened. Some good haircuts came out of that, I will say.

"GENERATION X author DOUG COUPLAND told me the people who will be remembered a thousand years from now are the ones that invented a haircut: Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, James Dean.

"I'm not sure the monk's tonsure is what I'll be remembered for but I will claim shaving my head, I was the first one ready to do it."
