Former THE SMITHS frontman MORRISSEY has launched a scathing attack on U2 rocker BONO -questioning his songwriting talents. The Irish group were recently hailed for creating Britain's best pop lyric, when the line, "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers," from song ONE, beat off competition from The Smiths' classic HOW SOON IS NOW?, which came second in the poll. But speaking at his Manchester, England, gig on Tuesday night (18APR06), a bemused Morrissey cast doubt on the result. He quipped, "I noticed in the newspapers that in a lyrical competition Bono did better than me. He's really nice, but really?"

I havent even heard of the Morrisey song that came 2nd. Perhaps I am on another planet, a bit like Morrisey is. to me U2 songs are pure poetry, & when put to music they are unique & unforgetable. I think Morrisey is a wee bit jealous of our Bono. Get a life, sunshine, when did you last fill a stadium with your tedious songs!

He is absolutely right... Morrissey is an uncontested literary poet, hands down!

Morrissey wasn't being negative about Bono's lyrics, he left his audience to make up their own minds, didn't he?Personally I do enjoy the early U2 hits and yes they are a great stadium band. Moz meanwhile touches many people in many different ways, he changed a significant number of peoples eating habits with the release of The Smiths album 'Meat Is Murder'. Now he, like Paul and Heather, is alerting his fans to the plight of the seal cubs in Canada - Respect to Morrissey.

Bono is a very talented artist. But no one in history has done more for lyrical integrity or enhanced the vernacular of Rock, than Morrissey. Period.
