Movie star Brittany Murphy recorded her first studio music sessions anonymously, because she wanted to know whether she really had the talent needed to become a pop star.

The Just Married actress booked a Los Angeles recording studio, backing singers, session musicians and an engineer under a pseudonym and then sent 'white label' copies of her hip-hop and jazz tunes to two nameless New York producers.

She says, "I wanted to test the waters first and so I recorded anonymously."

Murphy now hopes to release her debut album next year (05).

She joins a growing list of movie stars heading into recording studios for the first time - Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, Lindsay Lohan and Toni Collette are all set to release their first albums in the next 12 months.
