Movie veteran PAUL NEWMAN risked arrest and jail after leaving the army in 1946, by selling illegal booze to sailors and soldiers.

The movie great made the most of his position handing out discharge papers and liquor entitlement in Seattle, Washington, after the war, and started selling alcohol.

He recalls, "They had liquor stores there and you had to have a card that entitled you to a bottle every two weeks, or whatever, so I brought the cards to the guys who got discharged and took them to the liquor store.

"My buddy and I went to the dance halls on Saturday night and the sailors and soldiers were coming out with their dates and they had no place to go and no whisky, so JOE sold them the whisky at an extraordinary mark-up."
