Hit American police drama NYPD Blue has been broadcast for the last time in America after a 12-year run.

The popular TV show immediately grabbed attention during its first season with its strong language and real-life depictions of police work on the mean streets of New York.

The final episode featured long-running character detective ANDY SIPOWICZ, played by Dennis Franz, taking charge of detectives at the 15th precinct.

Actor Jimmy Smits explains the programme's central idea, "What if you took a format everyone was comfortable with - a cop show - and turn up the volume?"

Show creator Steven Bochco is behind new series BLIND JUSTICE which will fill NYPD Blue's US time slot from 8 March (05).
