Ono Tells Of Lennon's Beatles Cover Agony

John Lennon used to worry about why so few musicians covered his songs compared to how many reinterpreted the work of his fellow BEATLE Paul McCartney, according to his widow Yoko Ono.

On collecting the Special Award at yesterday's (10OCT05) Q Awards on behalf of Lennon to mark the 65th anniversary of his birth, Ono told the London gathering how her late husband would agonise over the smallest things.

Ono described how she used to comfort Lennon by saying people didn't cover his songs as much because they don't contain rhyming lyrics - in what many perceived to be a dig at McCartney.

She said, "John was very human. In the middle of the night he would say, 'They always cover Paul's songs, they never cover mine.'

"I said to him, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June-with-spoon that you write. You're a good singer too. Most musicians would be a bit nervous covering your songs."

Lennon was shot dead in New York City in December 1980.
