London musical Mary Poppins has beaten The Producers to land the most nominations for Britain's prestigious LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARDS.

The West End production of the classic Julie Andrews movie has been awarded nine nominations - including Best Actress for its leading lady Laura MICHELLE KELLY - even though it only opened last month (DEC04), to widespread acclaim.

However, rival stage extravaganza The Producers is close behind with eight nominations.

The Producer's stars, Lee Evans and NATHAN LANE - who has since left the show to appear in the Hollywood remake of the movie upon which the show is based - are both competing for Best Musical Actor.

Veteran actors SIR Michael Gambon and Jonathan Pryce are among the stars battling it out for the Best Actor prize for their performances in ENDGAME and THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA? respectively.

DAME Judi Dench has a Best Supporting Actress nomination for ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL, while the play itself is up for the Best Revival gong.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest production The Woman In White has five nominations, including Best Actress for Maria Friedman and Best Supporting Actor for Michael Crawford.

The prize-giving ceremony will take place at the London Hilton Hotel on 20 February (05).
