JONATHAN RHYS-MEYERS was shocked when his name was announced as the winner at the Golden Globe Awards on Monday (16JAN06) because he was convinced Kenneth Branagh would win.

The Irish actor was honoured for Best Performance By An Actor In A Mini-Series Or TV movie for his role as Elvis Presley.

He says, "I didn't expect it to be me. I thought they'd go with someone older. You had Donald Sutherland, Ed Harris and Kenneth Branagh.

"They are incredible actors. Legends. I thought it would be Kenneth Branagh because he played FDR (FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT), a much loved American figure. I was really shocked."

I watched the Golden Globe on Sunday night and was very happy Rhys-Meyers won for Elvis. But I must admit I was a disappointed in him. In his acceptance speech he never once acknowledged or said anything respectful of Elvis Presley the real life character he was playing. We all know that Elvis ended up a serious drug addict but this cannot take away from his contribution to the world of music & entertainment. He had a wonderful voice that people today can still listen to over and over again, people of all ages. He loved his fans & was very respectful to them. I can name many more beautiful things Elvis Presley brought to our world, but that's not my point. My point is to show some respect for an icon. Acknowledge him & be respectful. Otherwise, you are the person Rhys-Meyers plays in "Match Point". And, you lose a fan (which I know Elvis would have never wanted to do).
