Movie icon STEVE McQUEEN spent 30 days behind bars while serving his military service in the late 1940s, according to new celebrity files released by the US military.

The actor, who played the COOLER KING in prisoner-of-war drama THE GREAT ESCAPE, was punished for going absent without leave from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The newly-released papers also show McQueen received a commendation during his service as a teenager for rescuing Marines from a training accident.

The files also show Clark Gable enlisted in 1942, just six months after the death of his wife Carole Lombard, and persuaded his personal cameraman to sign up for service with him.

Other military documents detailing the service of stars like Henry Fonda, Elvis Presley and Humphrey Bogart have also been released.

The documents are available at the National Personnel Records Center in St Louis, Missouri.
