CARLY SIMON credits late friend JACKIE ONASSIS with her giving her the confidence to branch out and write.

The YOU'RE SO VAIN singer, 59, who has been writing children's works since her two children were young, wrote four songs for POOH'S HEFFALUMP MOVIE, out this month (FEB05).

And she admits her late pal encouraged her to put pen to paper.

Simon says, "She asked me to write an autobiography. I said yes, then I realised I couldn't do it. I showed her some of my stories, and she liked them."
